Carnatic Music 401 (Advanced II):
Overview:
​
Carnatic Music 401, the second advanced stage in Carnatic music consists of seven parts:
-Varnams
-Kritis
-Aalapanai
-Niraval
-Swaram
-Raagams
-Voice Training
1. Varnams:
In Carnatic Music 104, students will continue to grow their varnam repertoire.
​
2. Kritis:
At the second advanced stage, students will continue learning basic kritis in melakarta, pentatonic and vakra raagams.
​
3. Aalaapanai:
Students will continue learning and refining their ability to perform aalaapanai.
4. Swara Kalpana:
Students will continue learning and refining their ability to perform swara kalpana.

5. Niraval:
In Carnatic Music 104, students will be introduced to niraval. Niraval is an improvisation technique in which musicians give impromptu variations to a standard line from a kriti. Niraval uses techniques from both aalaapanai and swara kalpana.
6. Raagams:
Throughout the second advanced stage, students will continue to learn new raagams.

7. Voice Training
Throughout this course, students will continue to learn advanced Indian and Western style voice training techniques.
