Carnatic Music 201, the intermediate stage in Carnatic music consists of eight parts:

-Voice Training

1. Alankaarams:

Alankaarams are another important building block in Carnatic music. Thus far, students have learned two taalams (Adi and Rupakam). However, there are many taalams in Carnatic music. Alankaarams help students get comfortable with a myriad of taalams used in Carnatic music.

2. Swarajatis:

Swarajatis are a preliminary step to learning varnams. Students will learn a few swarajatis before progressing to the varnam stage.

3. Varnams:

Many great Carnatic musicians assert that varnams are among the most important steps in a student’s music journey. Varnams are crucial building blocks to the most advanced stages in Carnatic music such as difficult kritis and improvisation. In Carnatic Music 102, students will be introduced to simple varnams such as “Ninnukori” (Mohanam Varnam).

4. Kritis:

Kritis are the most advanced piece of repertoire in Carnatic music. At the Intermediate I stage, students will learn kritis in melakarta, pentatonic and vakra raagams.

5. Raagams:

While in the beginner stage the raagams consist of melakarta and pentatonic, in this stage, students will learn vakra raagams as well.

6. Geetams:

Throughout the Intermediate I stage, students will learn and memorize geetams in first, second and third speeds.
